Public vs Private: The Fundamental Choice
The single most important privacy decision on Instagram is whether your account is public or private. It's easy to find: go to Settings โ Account Privacy โ Private Account.
Public account: Anyone can see your posts, stories (while active), highlights, reels, and follower count โ whether they have an Instagram account or not.
Private account: Only approved followers can see your content. Your username and profile photo are still searchable, but your posts and stories are hidden.
Story Privacy Settings
Stories have their own set of privacy controls separate from your main account privacy:
- Hide story from specific people โ You can block specific followers from seeing your stories without unfollowing them.
- Close Friends list โ Share certain stories only with a curated list of followers.
- Allow message replies โ Control whether viewers can reply to your stories.
- Show activity status โ Toggle whether people can see when you were last active.
Importantly, you cannot disable the story viewer list on your own stories. If someone views your story while logged into Instagram, their username will appear in your viewers list โ there is no setting to prevent this.
Data & Advertising Settings
Instagram collects significant amounts of behavioral data. Here's what you can limit:
- Ad preferences โ Go to Settings โ Ads โ Ad Topics to restrict certain ad categories.
- Data sharing with Meta โ Under Settings โ Your Activity โ Download Your Information you can see what Instagram has collected.
- Off-Instagram activity โ Meta tracks you on third-party websites that use the Meta Pixel. You can clear and disconnect this data under Settings โ Your Activity โ Off-Meta Activity.
What Others Can Always See (Even on Private)
Regardless of your privacy settings, the following is always visible to anyone:
- Your username
- Your profile photo

- Your follower and following counts (can be hidden from 2024 settings update)
